3.2 - Inflectional suffixes of nouns
Number and, for compatible nouns, case are marked by two parallel sets of suffixes, one for vocalic stems and another for consonantal stems:
| Vocalic | Consonantal | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Singular | Direct | 0 | 0 |
| Oblique | [*] | a | |
| Gen-Loc | gaag | stem vowel + gaag | |
| Plural | Direct | m | aa |
| Oblique | ma | aa | |
| Gen-Loc | ngaag | stem vowel + ngaag | |
| Dual | Direct | lca | iiga |
| Oblique | lcana | iigana | |
| Gen-Loc | gaagii | stem vowel + gaagii | |
[*] The stem final vowel, if lax, is changed into the corresponding tense vowel, otherwise there is no modification.
Before the gen-loc suffix, consonantal stem nouns reduplicate the vowel in the last syllable of the stem. Example: máram (direct singular): "a/the chief"; máratt-aa(direct plural): "some/the chiefs"; máratt-a-gaagii (gen-loc dual): "of (the) two chiefs".
